FAQs about Calibra Puppy Food

When should I start feeding my puppy solid food?

We would recommend introducing solid food around 3-4 weeks of age, gradually weaning from their mum’s milk. By 8 weeks, they should be fully weaned and ready for a complete puppy diet.

How often should I feed my puppy?

Puppies can burn twice as many calories as an adult dog, this means they require frequent balanced meals. Younger puppies should always be fed small amounts regularly, this frequency can decrease as they get older. If you’re unsure, here is a rough guide:

  • From two to three months – four meals a day
  • From four to six months – four meals a day
  • Over six months – two meals a day

Keep in mind this can all depend on the breed and size of your puppy.

What should I look for in puppy food?

When looking for puppy food, you should choose a complete and balanced diet rich in:

  • High-quality protein
  • High in calories
  • Essential fatty acids
  • DHA for brain development
  • Easy to chew and swallow

Make sure your food choice is tailored to your puppy’s breed size. Calibra puppy food has different options for all breeds and sizes.

In addition, we provide a range of diet-specific foods, from sensitive dog food to hypoallergenic dog food – we have everything your puppy needs.

Can I feed my puppy adult dog food?

No - avoid adult food during the growth phase. Puppies have higher nutritional needs, and adult food may lack the necessary nutrients for proper development. In some cases, a vet may recommend a veterinary diet for specific medical needs, even in young animals. These diets should only be fed under veterinary guidance. Nutritional guidelines for puppies differ from adult dogs, so a vet must carefully calculate and tailor any veterinary diet to ensure it meets your puppy’s developmental needs.

How can I tell if my puppy is growing healthily?

Regularly monitor your puppy’s weight and body condition. You should be able to feel their ribs without excess fat, and they should have a visible waistline when viewed from above. If you’re unsure how to do this, speak to your vet or breeder. A puppy growth chart is a very helpful tool to help track their weight, speak to your vet about supplying you with one of these.

Can I give my puppy treats?

Yes – you can give puppies treats, but you should wait until they are fully weaned and able to eat solid foods. Make sure to wait until they have all their baby teeth, including the molars. Otherwise, you will hurt their gums or pose a choking or indigestion hazard.

For very young puppies, it is safest to give them soft treats to protect their teeth. Older puppies aged at least 6 months, and larger breeds can take harder, crunchier treats.
